Begin Your Novel With Confidence: How to Create Your First Story Spark (Even If You’ve Been Putting It Off for Years)

Do you have an inner voice saying, “I want to write a novel, but I don’t know where to start?” You’re not alone.

Life is hectic and full with raising kids, building a career, caring for family, or carrying the invisible weight of doing it all. Maybe you’ve tried opening a blank document at night only to feel your energy evaporate. Maybe you’ve carried a story idea for years, quietly whispering, “When it’s the right time, you’ll write it.”

But the truth every writer eventually learns:

Your novel doesn’t begin with a perfect plot. It begins with a spark. A single, promising glimmer of a story.

And you don’t need a full outline, hours of extra time, or a perfect plan. You just need a way to capture that spark — and the confidence to take the first step.

Today, I want to help you find that spark.

And if you’re ready to go deeper, I’ll share a brand-new opportunity at the end. But first: let’s set the foundation.

Why Starting Feels So Hard (And What No One Tells You About It)

Most beginner writers think their problem is lack of discipline or time. But it’s usually something else:

You’re overwhelmed by the size of the dream.

You don’t want to make the wrong creative choice.

You’ve been taking care of everyone else, and this dream feels indulgent.

You don’t feel “ready” yet.

But you don’t need to be ready. You just need a beginning. And that beginning is your Story Spark.

What Exactly Is a Story Spark?

A Story Spark is a small but powerful seed — the moment, question, or “what if” that ignites curiosity.

It’s not the whole novel.
It’s not the outline.
It’s not the world-building binder or the perfect character arc.

It’s simply the thing that gets your heart beating a little faster.

Common Story Spark types include:

A moment: A woman finding an anonymous letter on her doorstep.

A question: What would happen if someone returned to the hometown she swore she’d never step foot in again?

A character: A single mom who used to be a world-class violinist.

A feeling: The ache of “I know I’m meant for something more.”

The spark doesn’t ask you to know the whole story. It just asks you to follow it.

A Quick Exercise: Find Your Story Spark in 5 Minutes

If you’ve been putting off your writing dream, try this simple exercise:

  1. Grab a notebook or open a new doc.
  2. Answer one of these prompts — quickly, without overthinking:
    • The story I keep daydreaming about is…
    • The type of character I can’t stop imagining is…
    • What if…
    • The moment everything changes is when…
  3. Circle the line that feels most alive.
  4. That’s your spark.

It’s going to feel rough or incomplete and that is okay! Every novel you’ve ever loved began as something small and imperfect.

Why Your Story Spark Matters More Than the Perfect Outline

Overwhelm fades when clarity enters the room.

When you know your spark, you can:

  • Start imagining the opening scene
  • Build momentum
  • Dream beyond the possibility of someday to today.

Start imagining the opening scene

Understand your protagonist more clearly

Build momentum

Dream beyond the possibility of someday to today.

Your spark becomes a lighthouse.  And once that light is on, writing becomes far less scary.

I know what it’s like to let another year slip by and realize you’re still not where you want to be.  I did that for over 15 years.  Until I told myself, enough!

It’s okay to not know where to start, or think that you’re not a real writer. I get it.

Here’s the good news: in this very moment, you have the power to break down those barriers and be willing to take a few simple steps to build your confidence and write your story.

I’ll pull back the curtain on the dream of writing a novel but not seemly be able to start. This workshop will help you move past doubt and rediscover your courage.

In just one hour, you’ll learn how to quiet your inner critic, reconnect with your “why,” and take your first brave step toward becoming the writer you’ve always wanted to be. Your story matters, and it’s time to start writing it.

All it takes is setting an intention, facing the barriers you’ve built,  and taking an action.

  • YES, even if life priorities call
  • YES, even if time seems limited
  • YES, even if your inner voice is snarky

So if you’re ready to turn your dream to write a novel into reality, I’m ready for YOU.

Whether you feel overwhelmed… unsure where to begin… or worried you’re not “a real writer,” this workshop will help you take the most important step: beginning.
